11, Sky Heights: Chapter 15

Ranjit Wadhwa became anxious and afraid after reading Rashmi Mathur’s report in the newspaper. His heart started beating rapidly. He remembered how on Nisha’s birthday party, he had asked Don Sayyed Hussein to threaten her.

Ranjit had asked Nisha to come to a corner and whispered something in her ear. Then he gave his cell phone to her. Nisha took the cell phone and started to walk towards the door of her living room while talking on the phone.

The call had lasted for a few minutes. During the conversation, Nisha only said ‘Yes, yes’ and nothing else. She was afraid and tensed.

Don Hussein was saying, “Sign the film Ranjit has financed immediately. If you don’t do so, you will not live. And yes, Happy Birthday.” This was the don’s last sentence before he disconnected the call and Nisha had come out from the living room. Then Nisha had met Ranjit and gave his cell phone back without uttering a single word.  Ranjit had then seen Nisha whispering something in Karan’s ear. He understood that she was telling him about the phone call.

Ranjit regretted his move – he felt that he should have chosen some other time to make Nisha speak to the don.  If it wasn’t for the phone call, Rashmi Mathur wouldn’t have written an exclusive report accusing him of threatening Nisha. Now he was in deep shit. He was panicking and he could not think of anything else except one thing. He called someone from his landline in the hope of help. His hands were shaking as he dialled the number.  But what he didn’t know was that his phone lines were being recorded by the police.

Owing to media hype and public outcry about Nisha Narang murder case, the case was handed over to the crime branch. It was necessary to show that the police was taking serious steps to get Nisha’s killer behind the bars. Inspector Shinde and Senior Inspector Joshi were transferred to the crime branch intentionally and the investigation of the case was being continued by them.

Joshi asked Shinde to call Ranjit Wadhwa for interrogation. They had a reason for suspecting him to be the murderer. Rashmi Mathur’s report had made them record his phone lines and it was proved that he had connections with the underworld. The police also confirmed with Karan about what had happened on the night of the party and other facts that were written down in Rashmi’s report.

Ranjit Wadhwa was sitting opposite Senior Inspector Joshi in the interrogation room. Inspector Shinde was standing behind him.

“Shinde, play the recording,” Joshi said. Shinde played the recording of Ranjit’s conversation with the don earlier that day where Ranjit was heard saying that ‘he is in trouble’ but before Ranjit could say any further, the don has disconnected the call suspecting that it could have been recorded by the police.

When Ranjit heard the recording, he felt as if someone was asking him to jump off a cliff on a gunpoint. Both the ways, he was going to die. If he didn’t jump, he would be shot.

“Sir, this is not me talking with the don, someone who sounds like me has done this to frame false charges against me.” Ranjit blurted out in his defence.

“Mr. Ranjit Wadhwa, this recording is done by us. So you are accusing, us, the police, of framing false charges against you? And when did I say that the other voice on the recording was of the don?” Joshi sharply said. Ranjit had fallen in the trap which Joshi had set up for him.

Ranjit was speechless.

“Tell the truth. Or else we have other ways of making you talk.” Shinde raised his voice and told Ranjit.

“Ok…ok…I will tell you everything…” Ranjit succumbed to the pressure. The interrogation lasted for more than three hours where Ranjit told them about his underworld links and what had happened at Nisha’s birthday party that night.

Ranjit returned home exhausted. He was told that his interrogation was not complete and he will be called again. When he entered inside his house, he saw that a parcel was lying on his table. He opened it and saw that it was a cellphone. A few minutes after he took it out, it rang.

“Hello?” Ranjit said questioningly.

“I heard you were interrogated by the police.”

From the voice, Ranjit understood that it was Don Sayyed speaking to him.

“Yes, they had the recording of our conversation. I had no choice but to tell them what had happened that night…I am scared…I don’t know what to do…please help me…” Ranjit began pleading. He knew that anyone who gave information about the underworld to the police faced only one fate- death.

“I haven’t told them anything about our businesses in India and how and what we do and I will not tell them. I only told them about what had happened that night at Nisha’s party…”

“Ok. Don’t worry. Go to sleep.” The don abruptly ended the call.

Now Ranjit had two fears- the underworld and the police.

To be continued…
