11, Sky Heights : Chapter 7

May 17, 2015

2:45 a.m.

Nisha stood in the living room, numb in shock for sometime after Mohandas went inside his bedroom. She was very upset. After the scene Mohandas had made in front of the guests at her party, she did not feel like going back among them. Her father’s words echoed in her mind. She found it extremely difficult to believe that her father had threatened to kill her over the issue of money.

She went to her bedroom and opened the drawer near her bed. She took out a box of Dunhill and took one cigarette out of it and lit it. After she was done smoking the cigarette, she walked till the balcony of her bedroom and stood staring outside.

The guests at her party who cared for her were also upset on seeing her father’s behaviour but many of them were enjoying the drama that happened some minutes ago. In Bollywood style, all of them pretended as if nothing had happened and went on with the party.

Just then, a person came at the party.  Karan welcomed him. This person was Omar Hassan, an actor. He was often seen in the second lead role in the movies.  He was a newcomer in the industry. But within one year, he had made himself known. He greeted the people he knew. He looked tensed.

“Where is Nisha?” Omar asked Karan when he could find Nisha anywhere at the party.

“She will be here in sometime. Till then why don’t you have a drink?” Karan tried to hide his restlessness.

After arranging a drink for Omar, Karan went up to Mohini. Mohini had also gone to the living room when Nisha did not come back to the party. Karan asked her about Nisha and Mohini answered, “She is a little upset. But she’ll be here in five minutes.”

As Mohini and Karan were talking, Nikhil Malhotra passed by them. He was coming to the terrace from the penthouse. When Nikhil was coming back from the penthouse, Rohan Saluja was going to the living room. Rohan asked Nikhil, “Do you know where the washroom is?” Nikhil pointed in a direction and smiled. Rohan smiled back and walked towards the living room.

“Chandniji I want to talk to you if you don’t mind”, superstar Vijaykumar’s fiancé Ashka told Chandni. When Chandni nodded her head in agreement, she asked if they could  go and sit in Nisha’s guestroom. She knew what Ashka wanted to tell her. She had noticed the expressions on Ashka’s face when Vijaykumar was trying to impress Nisha, earlier at the party.

Vijaykumar was talking nonsense with Omar Hassan but Omar was not the kind of a person who would indulge in any kind of meaningless conversations with anyone. He was a reserved person and did not poke his nose in other people’s business. As Vijaykumar spoke to Omar, his eyes were fixed at the door of the living room. He was waiting for Nisha to come back. Omar was one of the few close friends Nisha had.

Omar made an excuse to rid himself from the company of Vijaykumar and walked up to Karan and Mohini.

“When is Nisha coming?” Omar asked them.

“Nisha had to talk something important with her father. So she went inside. She will be back in five to ten minutes”, Karan told Omar and did not tell him that Nisha was upset.

“Oh I see.”

Omar, Karan and Mohini then waited for Nisha together, as Omar heard Karan and Mohini talk about random things.

Ashka and Chandni opened the door of the living room to go to Nisha’s guest room. They met film producer Ajit Paliwal there. Paliwal ignored them by pretending that he did not see them went back to the party at the terrace.

“These people have no work, except drinking isn’t it?” Chandni grinned as she spoke to Ashka. Her remark was indicated at those people who frequented the washroom after drinking and had to take several rounds to and fro. On hearing Chandni’s comment, Ashka started giggling.

The main door of Nisha’s house was in the east and the door of the terrace was in the west. The third door in the living room connected the passage that led to the bedrooms. On the right side of the living room, was the kitchen and the servant rooms and on the left side were the bedrooms, including Nisha’s two thousand feet bedroom. Her bedroom included a three hundred feet bathroom and a one fifty feet dressing room. On the opposite side of her bedroom was Mohandas’ bedroom along with five other room out of which two were used as guest rooms. In one of these bedrooms, Chandni and Ashka were sitting. There was a fourth door in the living room that led to the lower floor where Nisha’s office and gym were constructed.

When Chandni and Ashka were talking as they sat in Nisha’s guestroom, both of them heard the sound of the door bell. But both of them continued their conversation thinking it must be some new guest. Except one servant woman, all the servants who were hired by Nisha were busy attending the guests at the party. The servant woman was in the servant room when the doorbell rang.

When the servant woman opened the door, the watchman of the society was standing at the door. His face looked white with fear. The watchman told the servant woman something in a shaking voice. When she heard what he said, she stood there in shock for a few seconds. And then she ran towards the terrace, screaming.. Mohini and Karan ran towards the door to see what happened and looked at her questioningly.

The servant woman was sweating and said, “Nisha memsahib…” When she completed her sentence, Karan fainted.
