Chanakya, who is also known as Kautilya or Vishnugupta authored the famous work, Arthashastra. He is considered to be a pioneer in the field of political science and economics.
His wisdom has survived across centuries and reverberates in many minds even today.
While his thoughts on women aren’t progressive, we’ll be seeing the person as a whole and focusing on the things that he said that were really wise.
As we move forward in time, taking a glimpse backward will be of utmost value. here are five quotes by Chanakya that will shun various mindsets:
1. “A man is great by deeds, not by birth.”
India is known for its vicious caste system and also for its communal hatred. Some people think that just because they belong to a certain caste since they were born like that, they are entitled to privileges. Others think that being born into an influential family makes them great. Acharya Chanakya lights up the path and tells us one simple thing – it is the deeds that makes one great.
2. “God is not present in idols. Your feelings are your God. The soul is your temple.”

So simple to understand and so true even today, isn’t it? Acharya Chanakya asks us to consider our soul as our temple. There is a certain mindset in our society today – about not doing certain things inside a ‘temple’ or a ‘place of worship’ but freely doing those things outside. Bizarre isn’t it? The whole world is a temple, God is everywhere, in every one, do what is right every time, doing it only in front of an idol is not worship.
3. “There are three gems upon this Earth: food, water and pleasing words. Fools consider pieces of rocks as gems.”
Running behind money – creating wealth has been the ultimate goal for most of the population on Earth. While we destroy mother Nature in our attempt to make profits, one day we will be deprived of the true gems – food and water. As for pleasing words, will anyone hungry or thirsty ever talk politely?
4. “Books are as useful to a stupid person as a mirror is useful to a blind person.”
Many pride in their education and certificates that they have earned. They feel that only by reading books, they are better than the others. Only reading books doesn’t make you better. Analysing, implementing and constantly making yourself better in action does. Otherwise, books are like mirrors to a blind person.
5. “The fragrance of the flowers spreads only in the direction of the wind but the goodness of a person spreads in all directions.”
This century is the century of showbiz, where everyone is more bothered about their image than their character. They are more bothered about looking good than doing good. Acharya Chanakya’s wise words hit the right chord.
