5 Reasons Why Bollywood Films Are Bombing At The Box Office

2017 looks like the worst year for Bollywood as high amount of big budget movies have failed to perform at the box office. Irrespective of the fact that the movie has an acclaimed director, good star cast, beautiful locations and music, it fails.

Here are some reasons why the movies are failing:

1) Audience wants rich content:

The audience today wants rich content. These days, the script is becoming the hero of the movie. A few years ago, a movie’s success largely depended on  the star cast, that seems to be changing. For example, a movie like Jab Harry Met Sejal could have been a hit. It had a big director, big star cast, exotic location and amazing music but it didn’t do well at the box office.

2) Steep ticket prices:

When the majority of India belongs to the middle class and can go watch a movie only during the weekends, steep ticket prices of 350+ acts as a deterrent as most people watch movies with the family which is usually followed by dining out.

Movies are an affordable source of entertainment only during the weekdays. Most people feel that movies should be ‘paisa vasool’.

3) Bollywood is having a tough fight with regional:

Regional cinema has taken over Bollywood and shattered the markets like a hurricane. Bahubali 2 is a regional film, with a big budget, great star cast, amazing location and director, though the content was preferred more as the first part of the movie made a big impression on the audience. Regional films are also being broadcasted on television more than Bollywood ones.

4) Change of taste:

Commercial movies have lost their stand out.  Low budget but fresh movies that have a social message or are simply a story work more than big budget ones. For example, Baadshaho was a commercial movie, along side with it Shubh Mangal Savdhaan was released. Shubh Mangal dealt with a mass reaching issue of Erectile Dysfunction and was a sleeper hit. Judwaa 2 once again is a commercial movie but it is a hit, as it was successful in making people laugh as the audience have dealt with so awful movies.

5) Hollywood movies and alternative platforms are preferred:

Movies from Hollywood are pulling away the audiences as most movies have extremely well-driven content. India has become a market for these films. Also, platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. are used by viewers to watch movies at their own time and comfort and at a very nominal cost.
