7 Interesting Facts About Star Footballer Sunil Chhetri

If there was something like a name being etched on the internet, Sunil Chhetri’s would be the man whose would be. He is the answer to every thirsty Indian football fan who wanted the sport to gain more attention in India.

We know that he recently scored a brace equal to Lionel Messi’s international goals tally, but how much do we know about his life?

Here are some interesting facts you’d love to know:

1. Current captain of the Indian national team, he is often referred to as ‘Captain Fantastic’.  He plays as a striker for Bengaluru FC. When he was 18, he began his career with Mohun Bagan, one of the oldest existing football clubs based in Kolkata, India.

2. Not many know that his father, K.B. Chhetri who was an officer in Electronics and Mechanical Engineer Corps of the Indian Army played for the Indian Army’s National Team and his mother, Sushila Chhetri played for Nepal’s Women’s National Team. Because of his father’s job, he had to move several times across the country but he refers to New Delhi as his home-city.

3. On December 4 last year, Chhetri got married to his long-time girlfriend Sonam Bhattacharya. Sonam is a business management graduate from Scotland and runs two hotels in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area.

4. Chhetri has been the named the All India Football Federation Player Of The Year not once but four times in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014.

5. He has studied at several schools viz. Bahai School in Gangtok, Bethany’s in Darjeeling, Loyola School in Kolkata, and Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan in New Delhi. He took admission at Ashutosh College in Kolkata but gave up studies when he was in Class 12 after getting a chance to represent India at the Asian School Championships in Malaysia in October 2001, according to Awaaz Nation.

6. He is an all-time top goal scorer for the Indian national team with 64 goals in 101 appearances. According to IBN Live, he was signed by Sporting Clube de Portugal of the Primeira Liga where he played for the club’s reserve side.

7. The 33-year-old player has helped India win the 2007 Nehru Cup under Bob Haughton, 2009 Nehru Cup, the 2012 Nehru Cup as well as the 2011 SAFF Championship, according to Wikipedia.
