There is a dark side in each and every industry in the world, but without confirming news or incidents we do not have the right to accuse. Nor are we accusing the Bollywood industry. But here we have the facts from the mouths of our favourite Bollywood stars who have been through the offer of the casting couch.
For those who don’t know, ‘casting couch’ means that the actors or actresses are encouraged to do sexual favours in exchange for a role or a debut break in a big movie.
These artists have been a target of the so-called ‘casting couch’:
1) Ranveer Singh:
Ranveer Singh in an interview with NDTV revealed that incident when he was invited by a casting director to his home in Andheri. Singh described the man as a, ‘highly sleazy gentleman’.
All this took place without the man taking least interest in the ‘Ram-Leela’ actors portfolio.
The man told the actor has to be ‘smart and sexy’ so that he can get ahead in Showbiz.
Singh said, “Later I got to know what he was interested in. When I said ‘no’, he was heartbroken like a jilted lover. I later spoke with other strugglers who said the man had made similar propositions to them.”
Singh thinks that this is the reality of the industry.
2) Sameera Reddy:
The ‘Musafir’ actress Sameera Reddy told DNA India, “If I deny having any bad experiences, I would be lying. Every industry has its downside and so does Bollywood. I have certainly had my share of bad experiences. But I have always managed to maintain my stand and command respect. The casting couch does exist, there is no denying it. I have just one thing to tell girls aspiring to be actresses. Nothing is worth selling your soul.”
3) Tisca Chopra:
This actresses has acted in so many movies and is in the industry for a long time. She was recognized after she played the role of a mother in ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and actor Emraan Hashmi’s lover in ‘Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji’, but this actresses too has her experience which is disturbing. She shared this incident in 2016 when she had a disgusting experience with an influential Bollywood director from a time when she was a nobody in the industry. When a famous director came to her with an opportunity – she was not knowing that working with him would mean agreeing to be his ‘bed squeeze’.
4) Payal Rohatgi:
Actress Payal Rohatgi has accused Love Sex Aur Dhoka director, Dibakar Banerjee. This was at the time of the ‘Shanghai’ movie, she said, “The problem arose when I spoke to Dibakar about giving me a role in his upcoming movie, Shanghai. He asked me to meet his casting director. I went for an audition. I had to act like a woman who had just received news of her husband’s demise. However, after doing it, I felt heavy at heart. I called Dibakar and narrated it to him. I also called him to my house meanwhile.”
The duo were good friends and knew each other well as they spoke of their personal relationships problems also.
Dibakar had been to the actresses house earlier also.
“Dibakar came to my house and commented that I had gained weight. He asked me to lift my shirt and show him my stomach. I didn’t like it. I told him I was in no mood for jokes. But he did not agree. I told him to leave.”
Later everybody knows what happened and that role went to someone else.
5) Kalki Koechlin:
The ‘Shaitan’ actress in an interview told International Business Times, “I must say, of course, it exists! It did try and entangle me in its grip but I am slippery, I always managed to get out of it. The minute I felt uncomfortable, I walked away.”
6) Radhika Apte:
The fresh talent of the industry shared her time when she was offered for a role in the Bollywood industry on one condition was that she has to sleep with that particular person. The ‘Badlapur’ actress is very generous that she did not get trapped in such a situation.
7) Ayushmann Khurrana:
Ayushmann Khurrana told India Today, “I have been through that initially when I was part of the industry. I was a TV anchor, so a casting director directly told me that I would have to do it. So, I told him that if I was not straight, I might have given it a thought, but I can’t do it. So yeah, the casting couch exists, but eventually, it’s your talent or potential as an actor or performer which would last. You don’t need to give it to such stuff.”
8) Surveen Chawla:
The Hate Story fame actress in 2016 also came through a casting couch in the South Indian film industry. Chawla told Hindustan Times, “I feel very great that I have not encountered this (casting couch) here (Bollywood). I have faced this (casting couch) down south and of course, I refused to give into that… honestly, I can only comment on it if I had encountered it in Bollywood. I don’t know if I should call it sheer luck.”
Always learn to take a stand, should you encounter something like this in the future. People in all industries may ask for sexual favours in return for promotions.
