When Balbir Singh was the flag bearer of the Olympics in London, ‘Finland’s President released pigeons and there were droppings of the waste on the flag. The moment Singh noticed this he was about to wipe the dropping, there was an Olympic official who patted him and said that “You are going to be Champs again. We believe, in Finland, that’s where a bird ‘dirties’ your left boot, nothing can stop you from succeeding!”

Balbir Singh won the ‘Padma Shri’ award in the year of 1957, was a freedom fighter’s son and once on his birthday he was gifted a ‘hockey stick’ as a present. Balbir Singh was referred to as the ‘Hockey Legend’ of India at that time.

In that Olympics, India scored 13 goals and won the match bringing the Gold medal home under the leadership of ‘Balbir Singh’. He was also responsible for three Olympic Golds and two Silvers in 1958 and 1962 at the Asian Games in Tokyo and Jakarta.
