When the trailer of ‘Gold’ was dropped on the social media it won many hearts as the backdrop of the story is India winning the first ever ‘Hockey’ medal after getting independence from the British.
The lead actor ‘Akshay Kumar’ who portrays the role of ‘Tapan Das’, an aspiring manager who dreams of coaching India and wants the country to win the ‘Gold’ medal in the Olympics.
The Olympic game was hosted in the year of 1948 in London after the gap of 12 years because of the ‘World War II’. India and Pakistan at that time had a joint team. The person who inspired ‘Akshay Kumar’s role is ‘Balbir Singh’.
When Balbir Singh was the flag bearer of the Olympics in London, ‘Finland’s President released pigeons and there were droppings of the waste on the flag. The moment Singh noticed this he was about to wipe the dropping, there was an Olympic official who patted him and said that “You are going to be Champs again. We believe, in Finland, that’s where a bird ‘dirties’ your left boot, nothing can stop you from succeeding!”
Balbir Singh won the ‘Padma Shri’ award in the year of 1957, was a freedom fighter’s son and once on his birthday he was gifted a ‘hockey stick’ as a present. Balbir Singh was referred to as the ‘Hockey Legend’ of India at that time.
In that Olympics, India scored 13 goals and won the match bringing the Gold medal home under the leadership of ‘Balbir Singh’. He was also responsible for three Olympic Golds and two Silvers in 1958 and 1962 at the Asian Games in Tokyo and Jakarta.
