You won’t believe this! In the tribal-dominated, Dumaria village in Pakur district of Jharkhand recently held a kissing contest for couples.
Some 18 married couples participated in this contest and kissed each other in front of thousands of others who stood watching. Approximately, four thousand people came to attend the annual fair where the contest was being held.
The village holds an annual fair where various competitions are organised every year. This year they introduced a kissing contest.
“Tribals are basically innocent and illiterate. Due to which, the family system is weakening. To make them aware of our social structure and responsibility towards the family, the idea of a kissing competition was conceived,” said Simon Marandi, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Legislator to Hindustan Times. He says that this was done to keep in the check the increasing cases of divorce in the village.
While public display of affection is not appreciated in India, kissing contests have happened abroad. This was the first of its kind in India.
