Blue For Air Force, White For Navy, Green For Army: Here’s How The Uniform Colours Were Decided

The colours and symbols of the defence uniform hold deep philosophical meaning. Each colour represents a specific aspect of Indian culture that resonates deeply within the hearts of the citizens.

At the same time, it holds reasons for the war zone and safety of defence personnel as well.

Following contents, you will go through the ethical and the practical reasons behind their colour selection for uniforms.

Ethical

The underlying symbolism of the three colours is based on the secular principles of India as a country. The three uniform colours as a whole represent a confluence of all religious principles but above all a philosophy of tolerance and righteousness.

The blue colour of Air Force represents righteousness, justice, and forwardness. Also that of constant movement that heralds progress and repels stagnation. Blue uniform indicates the integration of all colours, unity.

The white colour of Navy white indicates light, the path of truth to guide our conduct and Navy travels to different countries to explore the world. They achieved as messengers of peace. White colour symbolizes peace.

The green colour of Army shows our relation to soil, our relation to the plant life here, on which all other life depends.

Practical

Air Force wears blue as it brings respect and gives a great look. Compared to coloured and designed clothes, plain blue clothes were cheaper. Air Force mainly works in the sky which is of blue colour which inspires the Air Force men to wear blue but it helps when while doing air-patrolling in enemy territory, they jump out of the plane with a parachute for a safe passage – they can escape from the sight of the enemy and camouflage with the sky.

Navy wears white not to camouflage in water – they’ll drown in that case! Navy is also the oldest global profession. So, the colour of the clothes worn by the seafarers was white. The process of dying or colouring the clothes was evolved later.  White uniforms don’t fade in the sun. They are already white. Generally, white colour totally reflects the heat and keeps you cool whereas dark coloured clothes absorb heat more than light colours clothes.

Unlike Navy, using green and brown for Army is to ensure that while taking cover, the soldiers camouflage with the foliage. Also, dirt on green uniforms can’t be noticed easily. If you recall, green colour in traffic lights due to its large wavelength viewed from a distance as green uniforms help easy identification to provide search and rescue for soldiers when the time arises.
