For now, persons with mental health complications are losing their jobs at twice the rate when compared to the number of people who are mentally healthy. By survey, approximately 300,000 individuals with a long-term mental health ailment lose their jobs per year. 

What Is Mental Health?

Mental health is the psychological health of a human being and how one perceives the world around them. Societal well-being also plays a role. It impacts how an individual thinks, feels, and acts and also the way one handles stress, relates to others and makes decisions.

Over the span of an individual’s life, if one faces mental health issues, thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected by biological factors, life experiences, and medical history.

Depression Made Me Lose My Job

Unemployment is usually interpreted as an economic problem, rarely one looks on the reason behind losing one’s job – which could be depression.

Depression is a common mental health problem that causes persons to go through depressed mood, guilt, lack of interest or concentration, troubled sleep or appetite. Depression is an effect of bitter experiences or other life-changing happenings. Although, no clear reason is specified for depression, even then whatsoever the reason is likely to trigger unemployment in some way or the other.

Depression leads to poor thinking and performance skills and severely affects an individual’s creativity. It is discovered that long-term jobless persons are more of those who are self-absorbed or highly introvert. This indicates that the absence of socialising leads to depression which leads to loss of jobs. Those who spend less time with family and friends are less able to draw on their social networks for employment leads.

For whom a loss of a job could be due to comparison with their colleagues, getting married, having children or for generally living a better life; somewhere or the other depression plays a role. For some it might be a major, for others, a passing phase.

At the end of the day, loss of a job isn’t merely being deprived of salary but also the loss of a routine and association to colleagues. It is possible that poor mental health conditions such as depression make it harder to land a job.

Mental health plays a vital role at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Therefore, be cheerful, social and sense of satisfaction to keep your job near you and depression away.
