There are some perks of being born in the 21st century and then there are some backdrops. One of the major backdrops for book lovers is how the number of bookstores is decreasing & how it is so difficult to step into a room full of books and take a deep breath only to take in the wonderful smell of books around you. But with bookstores like Granth holding the baton to provide for a paradise on Earth – life’s good.
Granth is a beautiful bookstore located right next to the Arabian sea in Mumbai. The busy Juhu Tara Road has an unmissable storefront that you can’t resist walking into. And once you are in, you’ll just be glad that you climbed up the brilliantly illustrated steps that lead to Granth and looked into the mirror overhead and gave yourself a nice smile.
If you are a book-lover at heart – in the first few seconds of being inside this cozy place, you’ll know that this place is worth your time. Their quintessential collection of books is full of wisdom from various corners of the world. You would find books of all genres, sitting at the bookshelves of this dual storied bookstore – just waiting for you to unravel its secrets.
For those who are head-over-heels in love with books, Granth is like a heaven. The thousands of book-lovers who have visited this place have left behind happy and thoughtful testimonials about how they love the bookstore and would enjoy spending their entire day here.
What’s the cherry on the cake? Or lets say cherries on the cake? The panoramic view of the Juhu Tara Road, the long chalkboard for you to express your creativity in and the whiff of brewing coffee that is sure to transport you to a different world. Incredible isn’t it?
For comic lovers and for those who are looking for magazines from across the world, this is their one-stop shop. The crown in Granth’s jewel is their hard-bound classic collection that is embellished in golden. They also have their mini classics collection that no book-lover will be able to resist. If you have walked into the store and don’t know what exactly are you looking for, their polite and helpful staff will be more than happy to guide you in the direction of great books. They also have a ‘rare finds’ collection if you are someone who wants something extraordinary.
Apart from the books, there are a lot of other things to marvel at like the beautiful mannequins who hold some amazing quotes about books and reading like ‘Books are a uniquely portable magic’, or ‘Many a book is like a key to unknown chambers within the castle of one’s own self’ or ‘A writer only begins a book. A reader finishes it’.
Also, it is a delight to watch some postcards that are carefully displayed at the store. The lights at the store are covered with photos of various scholars, authors, and artists – who are literally shedding light in your life. Heck! Even the air-conditioners at this place have something to say. One of them says, ‘Books are cooler than me’. That’s cool!
As you climb up the stairs to the second floor of the store, the first sight that would great you is a toilet seat which says ‘It’s your own space’. In her column in The Times Of India, Twinkle Khanna had once mentioned the bookstore and its famous toilet seat and how the store is her stop to buy quality books. Not only Mrs. Funny Bones, but this bookstore is frequented by a lot of other celebrities as well like Zoya Akhtar, Riya Sen, Akbar Khan, Soni Razdan, Arshad Warsi, Sonali Bendre, Kajol and many others. Authors like Amish Tripathi also visit this bookstore.
As you walk further on the second floor of Granth, you would find yourself in the world of children – your children or the child in you or both will find comfort there. The bookstore states that they have the largest collection of children’s books – they have an entire floor dedicated to that!
Granth is a beautiful reminder of how the meditative habit of reading can allow us to undertake a journey into different eras and different worlds, all while stepping into the shoes of another person and looking at different lives from completely different perspectives. Books aren’t just objects, they are windows to the soul and Granth is doing a great job to make sure that those windows are always open.
