IPL 2018: Mind-Blowing Facts About It That You Need To Know

With the IPL auctions being on the minds of sport-holics, let’s talk about the Indian Premiere League (IPL). The IPL which is a professional Twenty20 league founded by the Board Of Control F0r Cricket In India (BCCI) in 2007. Lalit Modi is regarded as the man behind the formation of IPL, who is also the vice-president of BCCI.

Currently, eight teams are part of the IPL, viz. Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevlis, Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Each team has their home ground in the respective cities. Other teams such as Deccan Chargers, Gujarat Lions, Pune Warriors India etc. were dissolved at different times. Players can be acquired through these three ways – the annual player auction, trading players with other teams during the trading windows and by replacements for unavailable players.

The first season of IPL was played in April 2008 and thereafter has been played every year in April-May. In 2010, it became the first sports event in the world to be broadcasted live in on YouTube.

There are so many facts about the IPL that are lesser known even among the cricket fans. Today, we bring you the best ones:

1. Mumbai Indians is a team with the most wins and is also the team who has played most matches:

As of 2017, Mumbai Indians has played 140 matches, putting Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second place who has played 139 matches. Also, the team has won 80 matches which are the highest wins by a team, followed by Chennai Super Kings who have won 79 matches. The winners of the IPL’s 2013, 2015 and 2017 seasons were Mumbai Indians. But Chennai Super Kings has the highest winning percentage as they have played lesser matches that Mumbai Indians.

2. The IPL is worth $5,500 million!

According to cricwizz.com, the ‘IPL is now worth $5,500 million after the Star India deal. Star India agreed to pay to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Rs16,347.5 crore for five years for the global media rights—both digital and television, of the league.’According to Dulf & Phelps, The brand value of IPL in 2017 was US$5.3 billion. BCCI claims that in 2013, the IPL contributed $11.5 billion to India’s GDP.

3. Some interesting player trivia:

A. Zaheer Khan is the only player to have played in the 1st match and the 500th match of the IPL.

B. Parthiv Patel is the player who has played for the most franchises – 6 in this case.

C. Gautam Gambhir has the most fifties and ducks in the IPL (As per grabhouse.com, he has 11 ducks and 26 fifties.)

D. Piyush Chawla has bowled 360 overs in the IPL but never a no-ball.

E. In case of Adam Gilchrist’s bowling – he has the best numbers. He bowled just one ball and took the wicket of Harbhajan Singh in his last match.

F. Manish Pandey & Robin Uthappa have always played for the same team, even if the team keeps changing.

G. Suresh Raina has missed only one match in the IPL and has played 161 matches so far.

H. The only two Indian players to have won the title of the ‘Most Valuable Player’ are Sachin Tendulkar (2010) and Virat Kohli (2016).

Bonus: The team that has never made it to the finals and has the most losses is Delhi Daredevils.
