Kangana Ranaut’s character, ‘Praful Patel’ in her upcoming movie, Simran is based on the life of a Sikh nurse named Sandeep Kaur who is better known as ‘Bombshell Bandit’. In 2014, her story hit the news when he single-handedly robbed banks over different places across the United States.

Sandeep Kaur was born on 11th November 1989 and at the age of seven she moved to USA with her brother and sister, joining her father there. She was raised in a conservative Indian family. Kaur, in her childhood, said that all of the siblings were banned from using computers, mobile phones, television, friends, resulting in them being completely isolated. After the attacks of 9/11, Kaur and her brother were called terrorists in schools, immensely targeted, so the duo used to skip the school.

When Kaur was at the age of 14, her mother fell ill and was hospitalized. Soon after, Kaur dreamed of becoming a nurse, inspired by a nursing manager. She became a licensed nurse at the age of 19. She left home at 20 and moved to Sacramento to pursue the degree of Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

According to the report in India Today, in the year of 2008, Kaur made a fortune of $2,00,000 in the stock market, as the stock prices were also low due to the economic crash in the country.

At the age of 21, Sandeep Kaur was introduced to a habit called gambling. She with her cousin Amandeep ,for the first time went to a casino in Las Vegas. At the first chance, Kaur won $4000! She soon earned the tag name of being a ‘bold and lucky gambler’.

Kaur quit her nursing job for gambling. But it wasn’t always profit, she even made many losses. She once confessed to her family that she lost $60,000 in gambling.

She was being chased by the creditors and to escape from them, she fled to Union City in California, settling down with her mother. She began working 96 hour shifts as a nurse to pay off the mortgage.

Kaur’s mother tried fixing her daughters marriage, but nothing helped. However, in the year of 2012, Sandeep Kaur married a man of her choice, getting a $1000 allowance from her husband but that too she lost in gambling. Their marriage ended in 2014.

Sandeep was very soon threatened by the creditors and loan persons once again and was given an ultimatum of paying $35,000 in two days, with a choice either paying or working for them. Kaur said that, those people told her to go any extent to pay her dues! Kaur made her first robbery, escaping with $21,200 at a Bank of West branch in Valencia, California.

Kaur earned a title of the ‘Bombshell Bandit’, during the time of her second robbery when she threatened the bank authorities that if she is not handed the cash over, she will blow the bomb. After 2 more robberies, Kaur was captured, right after robbing the US bank of St. George.

Sandeep Kaur, was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for robbing 4 banks, and a fine of $2,50,000 for robbing each. Kaur’s lawyer Windward, pleaded that she was a victim of her upbringing, and the judge later reduced the quantum to 66 months in jail, ordering Kaur to pay back every dollar of the money she robbed.

Since Bollywood’s Kangana Ranaut can fit inside any role, this will be different than any of the ones she has done. Her fans are already waiting for the movie. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, watch it below:
