Jaya Bhaduri, a veteran actress born in a Bengali Hindu family on 9th April 1948, is married to Amitabh Bachchan since 44 years. She started her acting career at the age of 15 with a supporting role in Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film, Mahanagar. The actress had also joined the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune and passed out with a gold medal.

She has acted in many films like  ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Sholey’, ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, ‘Abhimaan’, ‘Guddi, ‘Chupke Chupke’ ,‘Mili’ and so on. She has won 8 Filmfare awards, a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award and was also awarded a ‘Padma Shri’ by the government of India.

Jaya Bachchan was the story writer of 1988’s super hit movie ‘Shahenshah’ which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Meenakshi Seshadri and Amrish Puri in lead roles. Originally the story was written by ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ actress and then it was refined by the director Tinnu Anand’s father Inder Raj Anand in 1983. The film got delayed till 1985 because Bachchan had developed a serious disease. The original choice for the lead female role of the film was ‘Dimple Kapadia’ but she was then replaced with ‘Meenakshi Sheshadri’.

The film Shahenshah completed 30 years yesterday – 12th February. We all know the famous dialogue, “Rishte me to hum tumhare baap hote hai, naam hai Shahenshah.”

In an interview with Cinestaan, director Tinu Anand got candid about the film. When he was asked about Jaya Bachchan penning the film and how she never wrote a film after that he replied, “No, that’s not true. It was all a lie. It was a just a matter of convenience. I can’t tell you the reason. It’s a known fact that the story was mine. I was the one who surrendered the title to Jaya ji. She didn’t have anything to do with the story. We credited her, but I can’t disclose the reason. It is too personal.”

Tinu Anand’s father late Inder Anand passed away before the film’s release. Commenting upon that Anand said in the same interview, “He passed away on the first day of my climax. That took me 10 days to shoot. When I went to the hospital, my set was coming up, while the dialogues for the climax were not complete. I was worried as I wanted him to finish the entire 23 pages of dialogue, all to be spoken by one actor in the court. It was a gigantic effort. He saw the worried look on my face. He called me to his side, oxygen mask on, and said, ‘don’t worry son, I will not ditch you. I won’t let people say that a father has left his son down by not finishing his climax’. You won’t believe it, on the last day, just before he breathed his last, he sat down with my assistant in the hospital and he put a full stop to the climax.”
