“You should be like Sharma aunty’s son, he is good at sports, good at studies and have you seen how well he dances?” said one mother to her son in a corner of the world. “Look at your sister. How well she is doing in her career. And look at you! You will do nothing productive in life!” said a father in another corner of the world. And their voices echoed. So much that soon, every other parent began comparing their children with others.
Comparision does not motivate your child to do better. It demotivates them. Every somewhat mature person understands that every single person is different. If you wanted someone to be like someone else, why give birth to them? Just manufacture in a factory! Clone them!
Many teenagers today are lost in the race of becoming better than someone else. So much so that they forget to become a better version of themselves. If a person does not excel in the performing arts and is inclined towards sports, let them pursue that. Remember something Einstein said,
“Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
