During the time of Napoleon Bonaparte’s rule in France, there lived a famous historian, Anquetil. He made a group of intellectuals in France who were against Napoleon Bonaparte. During Napoleon’s rule many geniuses had become his aides and became rich. But Anquetil and his group thought that it was better to live in poverty with freedom than be rich but a slave to Napoleon’s empire.
Many attempts were made by Napoleon to make the group change sides and come on his, but neither Anquetil nor his group members agreed to do so. They were very poor. Anquetil had faced financial difficulties throughout his life but in spite of that, he did not bend in front of Napoleon. There were many days in his life when he had to sleep without having food and the other days when he got something to eat – the food would be plain and bland.
One day, a friend of Anquetil came to visit him. He told him, “You are managing even through poverty right now. But what are you going to do without money in old age? You will have to take the help of Napoleon or some other king then. Have you thought about this?”
“There is no need for me to think about this,” Anquetil said confidently.
“I don’t understand…are you not worried?” The confused friend asked.
Anquetil said, “When I don’t need a king’s help to live, why would I need his help when I am dying, my friend? Freedom is more important to me than money. It is far more valuable.”
Don’t give up your freedom for power or money.
