Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī or how we fondly call him, ‘Rumi’ was a healer of hearts. His words were so powerful that they continue to inspire us to love! He majorly wrote in Persian but occasionally used Arabic, Turkish and Greek.
His name Jalāl ad-Dīn means ‘glory of the faith’. Rumi means ‘from Rum (Roman Anatolia or Asia Minor in the ancient times’.
Let’s revisit his work:
1. “Love is not an emotion, it’s your very existence.”
When you deeply think about this, you realise something very fundamental – if it was not for love, you wouldn’t have been in this world.
2. “Love is the bridge between you and everything.”
Love solves things, love bridges everything. There is no quarrel in the world that cannot be solved with love. There is no aim in your life that cannot be achieved through love.
3. “This is love: to fly toward a secret, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment.”
So beautiful, isn’t it? Rumi had his own way with words. You put your guard down in love, you feel naked – especially mentally. Love has the power to connect you with yourself.
4. “Love rests on no foundation. It is an endless ocean, with no beginning or end.”
Another gem. If love doesn’t have a foundation, how can it be shaken? Imagine that endless sea of water and then imagine the power of love.
5. “I was dead, then alive.
Weeping, then laughing.
The power of love came into me,
and I became fierce like a lion,
then tender like the evening star.”
Love ignites you, then awakens you. It makes you wiser, stronger and fearless. Have the courage to love truly.
