She Travelled 55 Countries & Discovered The Truth Of Life In Ladakh

Christian Elisabeth Teich whose parents belonged to Germany came to India at the age of 21 as a sculptor student as she loved drawing and sketching. Since childhood, she was in love with nature, loved to travel to different countries and wanted to experience their different cultures. During her 20’s, for most of the time, while travelling to different countries, she did hitch-hiking ( where a person travels by getting a free lift in vehicles). She is interested in philosophy and reading about different religions.

Chris even travelled to Africa where she worked as a social worker and was involved in setting up of schools and homes for children. In 1985, during the Ethiopian famine, she worked as a volunteer relief worker, experiencing misery and death very closely. She has seen many bad times in her life which has helped her in discovering the true meaning of existence.

Currently, she is living in India at Sarnath, behind the huge Buddhist dome-shaped building in a guest house which is run by this German woman.

One would come across a yellow gate on exiting her house, on which there is a sticker that reads, “ Falun Dafa is good”. Since a long she was drawn towards practising this, ‘Falun Dafa’ ( also known as Falun Dong) is a very ancient meditation system that is based on the universal principles of ‘Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance’ and this meditation can be done in five simple ways. Since 15 years she has been practising this. It was for the first time introduced by Mr Li Hongzhi in 1992, in China. Currently, around 100 million people are practising Falun Dafa across 114 countries in the world. When she came to Sarnath she met her husband (Indian) and then settled down with him.

Christian Elisabeth Teich spoke with NDTV sharing her experience, “I still am in love with nature, In my early twenties, I had an urge to know life and to see the world—but I didn’t have money, and at times I didn’t even have money to eat. I hitchhiked around France, Spain, Italy, Holland, England, Scotland, Ireland and North Africa. I loved reading books and sometimes even slept in open farms and forests.

Questions and quest continued, and one day in Brazil I saw a flyer about Ladakh that pulled me towards India once again. So I came back to India, and after a few years I met my husband and settled down in Sarnath, It’s extremely hot and humid in Sarnath. So every year I started to spend a few summer months in Ladakh. Once I was attending a women’s festival there when I saw a Chinese-Amercian lady doing a set of meditative exercises. I was instantly drawn towards her—she was practising Falun Dafa meditation. It took me a few years to take it up—and when I finally started practising this ancient spiritual system, it completely changed me.

It’s been 15 years since I started to practice Falun Dafa, I was mostly sick before and had lots of health issues. But this changed after I took up the practice. Also, now I’m more grounded and calm in the day to day situations, whether small or big,” she said.

Furthermore, she said, “After experiencing the joy of good health and a peaceful mind, I felt like sharing this good news with others. I started travelling around India to introduce Falun Dafa’s gentle exercises to students and teachers. I have travelled to more than 60 schools in Ladakh, North East India, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka. I share with them the values of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance. These basic values are the only hope that can strengthen our morality and uplift our society, bringing hope and prosperity into everyone’s life. I have gathered a lot of love and warmth travelling around—but the best thing I gained is the ‘way of the heart.’”
