The Fascinating Story Behind The Song Of Assam Regiment : Badluram Ka Badan

This article should begin with a salute to the Indian Defence Forces. Salute. Let’s read about the story behind Assam regiment’s song.

The Indian army’s Assam regiment has a song – Badluram Ka Badan Zameen Ke Niche Hai. This song is sung by recruits during their passing out ceremony (Kasam Parade) at the Regimental Centre at Happy Valley in Shillong. It is written by late Major M.T.Proktor to pay homage to ‘Badluram’. The tune of the song is taken from another song named John Brown’s body. The lyrics of the song are:

Ek khubsurat ladki thi…
Usko dekh ke rifleman…
Chindi khichna bhul gaya…
Havaldar Major dekh liya…
Usko pittu lagaya…
Badluram ek sipahi thaa…
Japan war me mar gaya…
Quarter Master smart thaa…
Usney ration nikala…
Badluram ka badan zamin ke nichey hain…
Toh humein uska ration milta hain…
Sabashh… hallelujah…
Toh humein uska ration milta hain…

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Indian soldiers participated in World War II when India was being ruled by the British. During that time, every soldier was entitled to ration (food supplies). The Quarter Master was supposed to report deaths of the soldiers to the authorities so that the ration for the martyred soldier could be stopped. But when Badluram, a soldier was martyred, the Quarter Master forgot to report his death or he was smart enough to avoid doing so.

As a result, his ration continued coming in, resulting in surplus ration for a few months for the army during the war. This surplus ration saved the army from death. How?

Sometime later, during the war the Japanese regiment surrounded the Indian army and cut off their supplies. It is because of Badluram’s supplies that the army could remain alive. Even a martyred soldier had the power to save hundreds of soldiers from starving to death! Amazing isn’t it?

The Rhino is the mascot for the Assam regiment and their official salutation is Tagda Raho! (Be strong/be it in good health!). Their warcry is Rhino Charge!

You can see the way the recruits dance below. It is simply beautiful. You can’t help but tap along!
