Dr Subroto Das with his foundation called Nayi Chaah Nayi Raah in Big B’s KBC’s current season, sent out a strong message.
Subroto Das who is the founder of the Lifeline foundation, came to play at Amitabh Bachchan’s show Kaun Banega Crorepati.
This year Das has received the fourth highest civilian award in the country, Padma Shri.
The World Health Organization reports that 1.5 million persons are injured and at least one hundred thousand killed in road accidents annually in India.
Subroto Das has launched an NGO – Lifeline Foundation, which provides help to accident victims on the highway, free of cost. Das has launched a number 9825026000 in August 2002, for any person who is looking for help on the highway. When anyone calls on this number the nearest ambulance, cranes and fire brigade rush to the spot for any help.
This helpline that was first started on the Ahmedabad-Surat highway, was then gradually expanded to the entire state of Gujarat. The service expansion also went far in states like Maharashtra, Kerala, Rajasthan and West Bengal.
So what made him start this NGO?
This started in August 1999, when Vadodara based doctor, Subroto Das’s car rammed in a tree on the highway at night, injuring 3 people and they got help after the long wait of 5 hours.
Subroto Das and his fellow travellers experienced the helplessness that day. They were saved only after a milkman stopped his bus and helped them. From that day onward Das and his friends decided that no other person on highway will feel what they felt henceforth and it led to the founding of a NGO, which gave birth to a network of ambulances on the highway.
Today due to Dr. Subroto Das and his organisation’s efforts, there is a helpline number 108 in 26 states in India for emergencies.
In KBC’s episode last month Judwaa 2 actress Tapsee Pannu came in the show to show support to Dr. Das.
