The Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of Tamil Nadu have got a 100% salary hike. Their previous salary was ₹55,000 which will now be revised to be ₹1.5lakh!
The announcement for the hike was made by Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, E. Palaniswami today at the State Assembly.
This has come as a shocker for most as the farmers from Tamil Nadu and other states of India are protesting for loin waivers since months at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. To get their demands met with, the farmers have adopted desperate measures like shaving their heads, keeping snakes in their mouths, staging funerals and more. But their needs have not been resolved yet. The farmers are demanding a 40crore loan waiver.
A similar demand was made in the Rajya Sabha, just a few moments before the announcement. The MPs have also demanded a pay hike.
“Our salary is lesser than our secretaries'”, said MP Naresh Agarwal in the Rajya Sabha today.
According to a report in India Today, the total cost of an MP to the economy of the country per year is ₹35lakh.
Quick Fact: There are 235 seats in the Tamil Nadu’s Legislative Assembly. It is a unicameral legislature – meaning it has only one house unlike most states that have two houses viz. the Vidhan Sabha and the Vidhan Parishad.
There are a total of 650 MPs in the Indian Parliament.
