One American man went to a lawyer. He told the lawyer, “I had lent ten dollars to a man I know but now he is not returning my money. I want to teach him a lesson and sue him in court. It is not about those ten dollars, it is about the fact that he cheated me and did not keep his word!”
“Okay, I will fight your case. But I will charge you twenty-five dollars to get your ten dollars back.” The lawyer said.
The American was a businessman. He took out twenty-five dollars from his pocket and gave it to the lawyer and said, “I will pay your entire fee in advance but I need that man to be taught a lesson!”
After the lawyer ventured into the details of the case, he got to know that the man who had lent money from the American was extremely poor and was not in a condition to pay the money back. That man was even hiding from the other people from whom he had lent money. The lawyer felt piteous towards him. The lawyer was an idealist, so he thought about what to do next for some time. At last, a thought crossed his mind. He went to the man and gave him the twenty-five dollars he had charged as his fees so that the man could pay his ten dollars debt to the American and save himself from the hands of the law.
The man was extremely grateful to the lawyer. There were tears in his eyes while he thanked him. Without having any expression of obligation on his face, the lawyer said, “Life is full of struggles and obstacles. If we face those obstacles instead of running from them, then we can achieve success.”
On hearing the lawyer’s words, the man got a new found belief in himself to do something productive out of his life. And with a new enthusiasm, he started working.
The lawyer had the right to give him such an advice because he himself had faced a lot of struggle in his life and then emerged victorious. Even now, he continued to put in efforts to achieve different aims in his life. He had started a business but failed in that then he set up another business but made a huge loss in that. Then he started working as a lawyer but even in that he did not settle. He had faced different obstacles for three and a half decades but did not give up!
In the end at the age of 60, this lawyer became successful for the first time. And this success was so huge that not just America, but the entire world started knowing him. The lawyer’s name was Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln came from an extremely poor farmer family and struggled in various fields of his life till he achieved success by becoming the President of the United States. He abolished slavery – he uplifted the Afro-Americans. He gave the notion of democracy: “Of the people, for the people, by the people.”
Lincoln’s life is an inspiration in itself. He never gave up on his belief in himself. He kept on struggling irrespective of all the failures he saw in his life without losing hope and faith. Today, his name is etched in the pages of history forever!
