All of us know the Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor and his grand family background of films from classical makers to legendary directors. He has portrayed various roles and set the silver screen on fire with his power pact performances and versatile characters in films like “Rockstar” and “Barfi”. How many of you are aware of the fact that this star whom you see on screen has actually derived his real name from his grandfather, the art director, and actor Raj Kapoor? Raj Kapoor’s full name was Ranbir Raj Kapoor.
So, how did all of this happen? What made Raj Kapoor give ‘Ranbir’ a name he edited from his own to someone? Through this article, I will tell you about the bond between these two.
Raj Kapoor’s son is Rishi Kapoor, a romantic hero of his era. Rishi Kapoor’s son is Ranbir Kapoor. That’s not all. Ranbir is the only son and Raj Kapoor’s only grandson of his three sons Rishi, Randhir and Rajiv Kapoor. The latter two have two daughters. Raj means ‘emperor’ and Ranbir means ‘leader of the battlefield’.
As soon as Ranbir was born, his grandfather came to the Leelavati hospital in Mumbai. When the question came for the name of the baby, Raj Kapoor held the baby-boy and said ‘Ranbir’. When Rishi Kapoor asked why this name, Raj answered ‘So, he will win over tough situations in life’.
Ranbir always saw himself as a carefree boy who never wanted to take up acting as a profession. Once, he accompanied his grandpa to the sets of a movie. Ranbir asked Raj Kapoor who was the director, “Sometimes, I see my father in court as a lawyer, sometime in college as a student and now he is in a village as a farmer. How come is it so?” Raj made the little boy sit on his lap and replied: “There are people who do the same work all through their life and then there are ones who in just one life do different kinds of work”. Ranbir asked who are these people? Raj replied these are called ‘actors’.
Once, in Ranbir’s school, his teacher asked him, “Son, what do you want to become in the future? His friend replied, “Ma’am, he will become a police officer”. Ranbir said, “Yes, I will become a police officer, a lawyer, a doctor, an engineer, a sweeper and a farmer as well”.
Can you imagine the faces of the other students listening to this unique reply?
Much to everyone’s surprise, the teacher asked how you will become everything? Ranbir said, “Cause, I will become the hero of films”.
It was Raj Kapoor who saw the hidden talent in Ranbir and was always a role model to him. Whenever there was a need for a child artist he would call Ranbir even from his school on the sets.
Ranbir in his debut movie ‘Saawariya’, portrayed the character of ‘Raj’, the iconic name which changed his career and his life as well, in loving memory of beloved late grandfather ‘Raj Kapoor’.
Ranbir Kapoor started his career as an assistant director in ‘Black’. He once mentioned in an interview something that his grandfather told him: “To become an actor one should realize how to make a scene more real for optimum results and that sense only a director has”.
Salman Khan once gifted him a painting of Raj Kapoor on his 27th birthday. He considers this to be the best gift he has ever received.
Ranbir Kapoor always remembers Raj Kapoor as his mentor, friend, philosopher and guide.
