Dindigul Sreenivasan, the forest minister of Tamil Nadu admitted about lying to the people about later Jayalalitha’s health and asked for forgiveness.
He said that the government had lied to the public that Jayalalithaa was doing well and was having idlis and dosas and also meeting people. He accepted that she never met anyone and no one knew anything about her health.
“Please forgive us. To make you believe that she is recovering, we had lied to you that she had idlis, chatni and people met her. The truth is that nobody saw her,” he said while addressing a public meeting in Madurai. Further, he said, “I seek a huge pardon from you.”
He apologised on behalf of all AIADMK leaders.
A faction of the political party believed that there was something hidden about Jayalalithaa’s death and there was some foul play. This faction led by O. Paneerselvam demanded a probe into the death of the former Chief Minister.
Jayalalithaa’s death unleashed chaos in Tamil Nadu and the dust has still not settled. She died on September 22, 2016 of cardiac arrest. There has been a lot of secrecy surrounded her health condition right before her death giving rise to doubts.
It took one year after her death for Sreenivasan to say that he was forced to lie. In the last week he made a controversial statement that Sasikala’s family was involved in Jayalalithaa’s death.
