When A Wealthy Man From France Decided To Collect Works Of Literature…

Once upon a time, a wealthy and wise man of France decided to collect the philosophical, spiritual and religious literature from across the world. He started his journey throughout the world to collect various works of literature, keeping all his tasks aside. He employed many scholars of different languages to translate the literature in the French language. He decided to read all these translations once the collection and translation process was completed. His world tour ended when he was 80 years old but he still wanted to collect more books.

A friend gave a wise suggestion and asked him to start reading.

The friend said, “Start reading or else you will not get enough time to read all the literature you have collected. You have a collection of thousands of books but if you don’t begin reading, they will remain unread.”

“But, still, my collection is not complete. I will read once it is”, he replied.

From that day he collected more books with increased enthusiasm. He employed more translators of different languages.

Years passed on. Finally, one day he took ill. The doctors informed him that he was going to die in a few months. He broke down on hearing what the doctors said. He called up all the translators and ordered them to stop the remaining translations and to make a detailed summary of all the collected books for him to read.

The translators promised him to try to make a summary in some months.

Months passed by and the doctor informed him again that now he has only some weeks remaining to live.

He called up all the translators again and inquired about the progress in the summary making. Translators replied that work is yet not finished. He was perplexed and ordered them again to stop preparing long summaries and make short ones.

After a few days, the doctor visited him again and after examining him, he sadly informed him that he was going to die in a few hours.

This time also the translators showed their helplessness. He requested the translators to make just a short note of some pages in a few hours. The translators started their work quickly and they came up to him with a short note in the evening. He told them that he has no time to read that short note also and asked them to just prepare a paragraph.

Translators prepared a paragraph but when they went to him…he was dead.

In the story, the wealthy man was just a metaphor. But, in reality, most of the people spend their life like him. Some live their whole life chasing money and some for knowledge. They waste their life in collecting materialistic things. They always try to secure their future and never live in the present.

Many talented people always postpone their work thinking that the work they do is really easy for them and they can finish it anytime. But, in this type of thinking they always forget that… the moment they are living is only the time they have got because everything else is uncertain in life.
