During the olden times, Greece was an extremely powerful nation and for the Greeks, their nation came before everything else. That is why it was very difficult for the enemy nations to defeat Greece in battle.
It was a time when Greece was at war with one of its neighbouring nations. The war-leader of the enemy nation wanted to know the war strategy and other secrets of the Greek and so he contacted Pausanias. Pausanias was a general of the Greeks.
Greece’s soldiers were ready to give their lives to save the nation but Pausanias agreed to sell the secrets of the nation for his greed for money. He wrote several letters to the war-leader of the enemy nations, spilling all the secrets of Greece and revealing its strategies. But before these letters could reach the enemy nation, the officers within the army got to know about Pausanias’ actions.
As soon as Pausanias’ actions came out in the open, he was sentenced to be imprisoned on the charge of treason. When the people of Greece got to know what Pausanias had done, they were wanted him dead. To save his life, he hid inside a small church and locked the door of the church from the inside. The people surrounded the church from all the sides and decided to bury him alive in the church. Immediately, stones and other materials were brought in to block the door so that he could not get out. The end of his life was now decided – he was to breathe his last inside the church. A woman put the first stone to build a wall outside the door.
This woman was Pausanias’ mother. Her love for her nation was much greater than her love for her son.
